Geek, Gamer, Husband, Father, Writer, Designer, Programmer and Student.
There’s a lot going on over here, and I’m trying to make it all fit into this crazy life that I’m living. Pulled in so many directions at any given moment, I rely on the strength of my Wife, family and friends to help me get through alive.
I work a full-time job and am enrolled in college full time, working on my computer science degree. I hope to transfer to a “big kid school” in spring or fall of 2014, and obtain my degree shortly after that.
While programming is what I do for a living, I’ve always had a passion for writing. I’m told that I’m fairly good at it as well, although I’m not sure how I feel about that feedback. I do know that I can sit down and bang out a story, script or essay pretty well, even if it needs some revision, it’s at least on paper to cut up and reorganize. I guess that’s something that a lot of people find difficult. I hope that some combination of my writing ability, passion for game design and programming will open doors for me in the near future.
I’ve got a spectacular wife. She’s my partner in crime and I wouldn’t trade her for anything. She’s got this awesome Master’s degree that I’m a little jealous of, which is part of the motivation for being in school. She’s just generally awesome though. I wouldn’t be where I am now without her patience and understanding. With any luck, there will be some positive changes for her with her job, and things will get a heck of a lot more comfortable for us. Preferably before my transfer to “big kid school”, since that’s going to throw a wrench in the works.
Together we have an amazing son who is currently about 18 months old. We’re teaching him “baby signs” and he’s communicating with us on such a level that I personally find amazing. The other day he signed “Daddy, more orange please.” Seriously. Eighteen months. I’m not child development expert, but I think that’s pretty amazing.
I’m totally a geek as well. Science, fantasy, gaming, I love it all. Cosplay is on my list, but I’m working on my weight, and once I feel comfortable enough I’ll be joining that little society of crazy fans. Live action role-playing, focused on a combat-based angle (vs a rock-paper-scissors or dice based system) is something that I have enjoyed in the past, and hope to start doing again in the future. A bad knee has kept me away from it recently, but as I mentioned before, the weight is coming off, and my knees are under less stress to keep me moving. I’ll be wielding a sword again soon! Tying the geekiness into my school work, I’m really excited to be taking physics in a few semesters. Mechanics and Electricity and Magnetism are on my list of transferable classes, and I can’t wait to take them. The only thing that’s a bit scary are the Calculus pre-requisites, but as I’m re-discovering mathematics as an adult, I’m much more interested in learning it than I was as a kid. Too bad you can’t have the maturity and understanding of an adult as a kid, Calvin and Hobbes style. That’s where I hope to help my son (and any theoretical future siblings) with school. Give them a solid foundation and understanding of why it’s important to learn things young, so you don’t have to waste time re-doing it as an adult.
That’s me in a nutshell. I’m sure there’s plenty more that I could write, but for now, I’ll move on.
